Shannon Mingus

2019 has been an exceedingly busy - and difficult - year for SugarKitty. In the past few months, I had to make a lot of difficult decisions, least of which was whether or not to keep SugarKitty's doors open or to close for good. I have decided, for now, to keep SugarKitty going, but with several major changes in place as outlined below.

As you may or may not know, I have cervical spondylosis with vertebral subluxation. This is a fancy way of saying that I have arthritis in my cervical spine, and my vertebrae don't line up properly when my neck bends forward. This is a result of a minor car accident I was in several years ago. While I don't have issues with my neck per se, I do have issues with my hands, wrists, elbows and arms. The arthritis pinches my nerves, causing pain, numbness and lack of dexterity. Arthritis is incurable and degenerative, so in an effort to preserve what use of my hands I do have, I need to cut back.

As always, I thank you for your continued support and patronage. It means the world to me to do what I love and have so many people love it, too!

This change was bound to happen regardless of the situation with my hands. As SugarKitty grows, so does the demand for pasties and the size of my clientele. Unfortunately, 3-4 weeks is no longer feasible as a general turnaround time (though there will be times of the year when I am able to complete orders more quickly). For the same reason, I have also cut back on the number of pastie styles available for rush order.

This, too, was an inevitable change. 30-40% of my current orders are custom, one-off designs. While I absolutely love custom work, I have always taken these orders on at a financial loss. Custom designs take 2-3 times as long as my stock designs, which means I work for many hours for free. As the demand for custom designs grows, it is no longer sustainable for me to do them at no cost.
The fee will be approximately $50/design PLUS the cost of pasties. Expect to pay a minimum of $100 for custom work.

As of October 2019, SugarKitty has retired from vending. I will be selling off the remainder of my vending stock through the website, via the SugarKitty Instagram or as part of grab bags. Throughout 2020, I will be reducing the number of pasties available in the SugarKitty Etsy shop. Eventually, pasties will be available only at I am suspending wholesale orders indefinitely (though this may change in the future).

A friend and I have started a new business, GildedTilly. We make custom air plant, succulent and cactus arrangements. Because this puts far, far less stress on my hands and arms, I'm going to be shifting my focus primarily to this business. Give us a LIKE and a FOLLOW

This, too, was yet another inevitable change. I have underpriced and undervalued my work for years. As well, supply costs have risen enormously over the past year. At this rate, it is financially unsustainable for SugarKitty to remain in business. I love my job, I love my work, but I can no longer operate at a loss.

This is a minor change, but should help expedite the quote process. I've made a form specifically for custom pastie requests that can be found at the bottom left-hand corner of every page on Please use this ONLY for custom requests!
